[00:00:56] Good morning, Mosaic. Can you believe it? Week two. We are week two in this thing. What's happening? What is happening? I'll tell you what, you know, like Pastor Kristen said, it doesn't matter what's going to happen next week because we are meeting together. Miss you guys. Miss you guys. Miss seeing you guys. I know you see me, but I miss you guys. So, anyways, it's all good. It's all good because I am pretty excited today because we're kicking off a brand new season, and if you're tuning in and you're like, what's a series? Basically what we do is we take a couple of, you know, weeks and we talk about a particular idea or thought or maybe a passage in the scriptures. And so today we're kicking off a series called what We Believe. What We Believe. And it's interesting because when we, when we think about it, and if you've started coming to Mosaic, you probably have thought that, like, I wonder what the church believes. Like, what. What is their statement of faith? Have you ever heard that? Now, if you've done some research on us, you probably checked us out online and you read our statement of faith. But this whole idea of what we believe, what we believe is really important to a lot of people these days because it's connected to spiritual maturity, like, even spiritual growth, right? Because people go, well, I gotta believe the right things. And that's how you move.
[00:02:09] That's how you grow. So my question to you is, how old are you spiritually?
[00:02:14] Yeah. Because the series is about spiritual maturity. So how old would you say? I know some of you guys are like, hey, listen, Naim, you know, frankly, when it comes to, like, how old people are. I think age is just a number, you know, I'm saying, obviously, obviously, if you believe that you, you, you failed math and you skipped biology because it's, it's. It's not about all, you know, how you act and how you feel. It's. Age is a thing. Age is a thing.
[00:02:42] But let's not talk about, like, your physical, your physical abilities. Let's talk about your spiritual maturity. How old do you feel? How mature of a follower of Jesus would you call yourself? Now, the good thing is I can help you. I can help you because I got an illustration for you and I got some chairs over here, okay? So this first chair over here, I call it the adult chair, okay? This is like, you are an adult. You are a spiritually mature adult follower of Jesus, okay?
[00:03:16] Then we've got this other chair over here, and this is like your, I would say the teen chair, okay? And frankly, this is some of the chairs our teenagers use. So this teen chair, a teen chair, is like, you know, I mean, like, you know, you're a teenager spiritually, and maybe, maybe, maybe you're not that. Maybe you're one of these guys. Look, right here. Yeah, this is the toddler one. You're like, ah, come on, name. I'm not a spiritual toddler, but I don't know, maybe. I don't know. Ask someone who's close to you, who's being honest with you. Maybe she's like, you know what? You are a toddler. Okay? Emotionally. Anyways, we're not going to get into that because that's on the series, right? All right. And then, then you got this, right? What is this called? The. Come on, what do you say? Yeah, it's the high chair. And the question is, are you a baby Christian? Now, some of you might say, you know what, Naim, I get this, but yeah, I think maybe I can identify with the fact that I actually am a baby Christian. And it's all good, it's all good. It's all great. Because over here, what you need is, like, you need to be fed. Like, you need. You can feed yourself spiritually. What's interesting about this is like, I don't know if you ever heard this phrase, but pastors do. And sometimes people will say this at churches. They. And people go, you know what? They come to church and they go, you know what? I'm coming to this church because my other church did not feed me. Well, if you ever said that or ever thought that, I just want you to know you're probably not sitting on any of these chairs.
[00:04:38] You might be sitting on this one. I know, because here you don't self feed. Someone has to feed you. You guys know, some of you guys, you have actual babies and you know the situation here, okay? Now the toddler situation is they can eat, but they'll put anything in their mouth. You know what I'm saying? It's like, you're like, stop eating that. That's not even food. It's not even food. These guys, you gotta feed them. This guy, you gotta like, you know, oh, gosh, stop eating that. Eat this. Now the teenager, the teenager, when it comes to feeding, well, it just.
[00:05:11] They just, you know, honestly, they eat their feelings. You know what I'm saying? I mean, some adults do too, but, you know, like, they eat what they want to. My daughter, right, she got on this kick of these spicy orange, I think Takis. Have you heard Takis before?
[00:05:28] I was like, what is that? I tried it. And then she would dip them in, I think, peanut butter or something ridiculous. And she's like, I love this. So he's like always experimenting on what they want to eat. And it's like making combinations of things. And this is like your teenage spirituality. This is like when it comes to that, you just try everything. You're like, I. I wanna know this spiritually. I wanna try this spiritually. You combine certain things. It's not even food, but you're open to whatever, right? And then you're an adult. An adult eating wise, I mean, you can intentionally choose to eat poorly or eat healthy. You can choose to do that. You can choose to be vegan. You can choose to be pescatarian. You can choose to be something. Something I don't even know. But. But you'd be like, I'm choosing to do this. Now, what's interesting about this is that if this was likened, if these chairs were likened to spiritual maturity, I think we have to eventually get to this point, right? We don't want to be spiritually babies where people need to feed us, other people need to feed us. We don't wanna be people who don't know what real food is. So we put anything in our mouth or anything in our brains or anything in our hearts. We don't want to be here because this is all about, like, the learning things and we wanna debate things. I mean, teenagers, you know, you've heard of this and I've been a teenager. I'm sure you have, if you're not already one. Like, this is where you defy the odds. This is where you go, how about this? This is where you argue things, you're learning things, and that's great. But then at some point, you gotta get to a point here, spiritually, where now you change and you're becoming a certain kind of person. Now, here's why I use this illustration, because spiritual maturity, when you come here as an adult, it is tough. It's tough to understand. Okay, what does that look like for some of us? You're like, I don't. I think I'm here. I think I'm here. Maybe I have these tendencies, but I think I'm here. My question is, how do you know you're here? And how do you know you're growing as an adult? How do you know you're feeding yourself, you're feeding your soul correctly, and you're actually becoming the person that God wants you to be. And so for some of us, you'd say, oh, yeah, I know what I need to do. I need to believe the right things. I need to believe and read the scriptures. I need to. And so that's great. Yeah. So we take the scriptures, we take the Holy Bible, right? And we go, okay, this is what this is. I have to believe all this stuff. I have to understand this stuff. And sometimes when it comes to spiritual maturity, we just think that we have to believe and align ourselves and agree with everything the scriptures talk about. Now, what's interesting about that, I don't want to miscommunicate this. I don't want you to miss this. I'm not by any means, saying to the scriptures are not important and they're not inspired. They are. They are, they are. But it is extremely tough to align your whole life to the Bible. Here's why. Because the Bible is a library of books. It's a library of books. I mean, so that means you've got like, it's so many different books. The first five of them are like the Jewish books, the Torah, which is in here. Then you've got like the Jewish history and prophecy books. And then you've got like psalms and proverbs, which are little different. And then you've got this whole New Testament. And that is like. That's like speed sped over because that, you know, just jump starts with Jesus and then it's the life of the early church. So it's very hard because there's so many books in here that you can't align your life to everything because some of these things have changed. Like some things that were okay in the first half of the book are not okay in the other half of the book. Like, some things that were, like, forbidden in the Old Testament are seeming to be okay in the New Testament. So how do you live your life growing in the Scriptures, knowing that you're maturing?
[00:09:35] So all that to say is that we at Mosaic, we've not figured that out. We basically believe this, that spiritual maturity is really about this. It's not necessarily aligning your lives to. To the whole Bible because it's so hard to do as a library. But what we have to do is we have to align ourselves, okay? Align ourselves to the words of Jesus, the ways of Jesus, and the values of Jesus. And so the Scriptures are great because they're a great tool to help us understand in context not just what Jesus was saying, but what he was also referring to.
[00:10:19] But the end of the day. At the end of the day, spiritual maturity is not for you and I to know and agree and be able to quote the Bible. It is, in fact, us living out the words, the ways and the values of Jesus. That's it. That's really it. Now, it's as simple as that. But it's extremely hard because I gotta tell you, as an adult conversation, it's easier to just kind of go, no, no, no. I wanna argue all kinds of things. I wanna be this. I wanna discover more.
[00:10:56] You should do that. That's also. That's great. That's great. Because all of this is like not knowing what you need to know and then eventually get to a point where you're believing some things, right? You're like, I believe this, I believe that. But here is when you start living them out, you actually start doing them. So spiritual maturity is actually living out the words of Jesus, his ways and his values.
[00:11:22] See, what's interesting about that is when Jesus shows up, Jesus shows up.
[00:11:29] He tells stories to the Jewish people about their life with God. He explains to them. He uses their Bible and. And their Bible back in the day was the Torah, okay? And so it was the five books. And he begins explaining that he also brings out the other books in the Old Testament a little bit about. He referenced them as well. And he begins to show them that, in fact, that even though. Even though. Even though there are like, 39 books in the Old Testament, there is, in fact, a new thing that God wants to do.
[00:12:09] So what Jesus was doing was he was like, this is all great, but I wanna grow you spiritually. And here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna tell you, I'm gonna give you my words, and my words are gonna give you life. My view on who God is is gonna change the game. And so I want you to know that as a rabbi, he took. He took their Bible, but he expounded on it. And then he says, you've heard it said, but I'm telling you this, I'm telling you this. I'm telling you this is the kind of life you need to live. And see, it's so hard. It's so tough, because I think for some of us, we would rather distract ourselves with the entire Bible than actually live out the teachings of Jesus. Because his teachings are hard. They are tough, tough, tough, tough, tough, tough to really to understand. For example, when Jesus came, comes in, he talks about all the commandments that they had. Now, they had all kinds of commandments. They had laws over hundreds of them. They had the Ten Commandments and all that. And then Jesus one day gives them a new commandment. He said, no, this is what I want you to do. And he says this. Maybe you've heard this before. This is John, chapter 13. And he says this. He says, he says a new command. I give you love one another.
[00:13:34] As I have loved you, so you must love one another. And by this, and by this, everyone will know that you are my disciples. And you, if you love one another.
[00:13:47] Now, see, the old commandment they had was love.
[00:13:52] You know, love others the way they love you. Love, like, love your neighbor as yourself. That was the golden rule kind of thing. That is what they had in their old Bible. Jesus comes in, says, hey, hey, no, no, no, no, this is a new one.
[00:14:07] This is a new one. This is a new teaching. And so he says, no, I want you to love the way I have loved you, the way God loves you. Not how people have treated you. Not how you grew up. Not in the traumatic home, not in the abusive home. Not. No, no, no, don't love people by the measure that you've been loved. No, love people the way God loves you and the way I have showed you how to love. This was one of the examples of how Jesus changed, in one sense, the trajectory of their faith. Basically, Jesus said, no, no, no, I need you to understand this. I am the son of God. I'm telling you this, and you need to live by my words. I'm changing a lot of things. And see, at first they were like, all good about it, but then, you know, if you read the Scriptures, then you know that they had some serious issues with Jesus. In fact, they loved him at one Point. Then they wanted to kill him, then they wanted to arrest him. And eventually they did. They put him in prison for a little bit. And then obviously they crucified him. All because of his words, because he was changing the words and he was asking people to live by a certain way.
[00:15:22] And when the disciples began to live a certain kind of way, when they started doing that, when the early church started doing that, they were actually called. Not Christians. They were called. I don't know if you know this. They were called People of the Way because they began to live their life, orient their life towards the teachings of Jesus. They were Jewish people. They had the Torah. They had their own Bible. But they were like, no, no, no. Okay, but we're going to actually change and take on the values of Jesus, the ways of Jesus, and the words of Jesus. We're gonna live out his words. And I don't know about you guys, but, I mean, I can distract myself with the Bible, but when I look at the words of Jesus, they cut to the core because they say things to me that only adult could figure out. Like, as in, you gotta be emotionally and psychologically really mature to, for example, turn the other cheek.
[00:16:16] What? Turn the other cheek. I can't do that. Go the extra mile. That phrase comes from the teachings of Jesus. When you begin to live out his words or when you attempt to, you go, whoa, this is tough. This is extremely hard to do.
[00:16:33] But I want you to know that the goal of Jesus, the goal of the Holy Spirit in your life, is not for you to know the reference to every scripture out there.
[00:16:44] It's actually to orient your life to the words, the ways and the values of Jesus. The question is, are we doing that? So Jesus one day and spoke right into it, and here's what he said.
[00:16:59] He says, Matthew 7. He says, I want you to know, not everyone who. Who says to me, lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven.
[00:17:12] Oh, okay, what? And then he keeps on going. He says, but only the one who does.
[00:17:20] Who, what does?
[00:17:23] The will of my Father who is in heaven, who does not just believes, because they call him Lord, because they believe he's Lord. He says, there are people gonna be coming to me. They're gonna be like, hey, hey, hey, Lord, Lord, what's going on? And he's going to be like, there's going to be.
[00:17:42] They're going to have a rude awakening.
[00:17:45] Then the next verse, he says this. He says, many will say to me on that day, lord, Lord, hey, did we not prophesy in your name?
[00:17:55] Did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name we drove out demons in your name. We performed miracles. We did all those things.
[00:18:08] And then he says, but then I will tell them plainly, I never.
[00:18:15] What's that word? Knew you.
[00:18:17] I don't.
[00:18:19] I never knew you.
[00:18:21] I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers.
[00:18:26] And then Jesus goes right into this thought. He says, therefore. Therefore, anyone who hears the words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
[00:18:43] Then the rain came and the stream rose and the winds blew and beat against the house, yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock. Maybe you've heard that before.
[00:18:57] This is the context of it. Then he goes on and he says, but anyone who hears, listens, maybe even believes it.
[00:19:06] Of my word, these words of mine, and does not. He does not. Does not put them into practice. Is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
[00:19:21] The rain came, streams rose, and the wind blew and beat against the house, and it fell with a great clash, crash.
[00:19:33] What's he saying here? He's saying, hey, the point is not for you to agree with me.
[00:19:44] The point is not for you to agree with my words.
[00:19:47] It is for you to follow and live out my words. He said, I'm telling you all, I'm giving you a new way to live here.
[00:19:56] I'm giving you a new perspective of humanity and giving you words to treat each other differently.
[00:20:04] If you hear them and agree with them, you think that they're cool, that's awesome. That's great.
[00:20:10] But that's not gonna do anything for you.
[00:20:13] If you begin to live out my words, all of a sudden you're on the rock. You've set your life on the rock. See, I think for some of us, honestly, when coming back to these chairs, I think for some of us, the whole believing is right over here. It's all these chairs. It's like learning to know some things you don't know, and then you, you know, figuring it out and learning and all that. And like, I agree, maybe I don't agree and all that. And a lot of people spend their time here. And what happens, too, is. What happens too is some of us, we never make it to doing because all this is believing. And we spend our lives going, I don't know if I believe that. I'm not quite sure if I believe that. I'm not quite sure if I believe that. Okay, well, if you measure your spirituality on the number of things you agree with and believe about Jesus or the Bible, that doesn't.
[00:21:08] That's not spiritual maturity, friends.
[00:21:11] This is this guy. Because this chair does something, it does something. It doesn't know all the scriptures.
[00:21:20] It practice at least some of the teachings of Jesus, the ones they know.
[00:21:26] That is a game changer. That's a game changer. But see, so often we just go, no, no, no.
[00:21:34] We have to know so many other things. Jesus changed the game, friends. Changed the game. Let me show you another passage here. Okay, this is really interesting.
[00:21:44] Okay, so this is the passage where we read when we do communion. Okay? So as you guys know, Jesus actually, you know, gave us the practice of communion. The way we do it and we call it. It was the Last Supper. Now, in context, the Last Supper actually came about because it was actually a Passover meal. A Passover meal is a Jewish tradition where they celebrate Passover. And what does it mean? Why Passover? Well, the Passover meal signifies the time where the spirit of death passed over the houses of Jewish people who had the blood of the lamb.
[00:22:32] Now you go like, oh, what is happening here? Now if you.
[00:22:35] Moses, Exodus, you could study that. But basically, one of the things that happened there is that that there was this incident where. Where the spirit of death was moving through the city and anyone's doorpost that had the blood of the lamb, it passed over.
[00:22:56] And that also signified their. That was one of the last miracles. And that led them out. It was signifying the Exodus out of slavery into what God had for them.
[00:23:09] That is why they practiced that. So that's why Passover traditionally has lamb that has the bread that has some wine or juice element to it.
[00:23:21] So that's what Jewish people did.
[00:23:23] So Jesus, one day he has Passover with them, but then he changes it. See, then he changes the game. Then he introduces his new things. So here's what he does. Matthew 26. As they were eating, so they're doing that, Jesus took a loaf of bread, he gave thanks and broke it in pieces. He gave it to his followers and said, take, eat. This is my body. I want you to know, he changed Passover meal.
[00:24:01] He changed it.
[00:24:04] That's one of the reasons why he got him into trouble, because he was constantly. His words was changing their Torah and their Bible. It was changing it. His words were not this new thing. And then he says, here, this is my body. Then he took the cup and he gave thanks. And he says, hey, hey, hey. He gave it to them and he said, you must all drink from it.
[00:24:27] This is my blood. And this translation says this, okay, this is my blood, blood of the new way of worship. In other translations it says, this is the blood of the new covenant. And some people are like, what is covenant? This is it. It's the new way of worship. It's the new way that you live a life of worship. It's a new way, he says, which is given for many. It is given for the. So the sins of many will be forgiven. Jesus changed Passover.
[00:25:01] It was a big. It was a big deal, friends. It was a big deal.
[00:25:06] And then. And then what happens is they begin to live this kind of life. And when they begin living this kind of life, it changes everything. They were Jewish people. All of a sudden, people didn't call them Christians, no, they called them people of the way because the Jewish people were doing these Jewish people were. Were doing a new way and living a new way and had a new way to live.
[00:25:31] So all of a sudden what happened is the early church did not all of a sudden start practicing all of their Bible, all their scriptures. No, what they did was they started aligning their lives to just the words of Jesus, the ways of Jesus, and the values of Jesus. And that is how they got persecuted. That's how actually the kingdom and. And this whole Christianity we call started. That's why we have all the Scriptures, because we have that, what they did. And then more of all the churches that were built. And that's why the New Testament is full of letters to other different churches. But all of this came about not because of the Torah. It came about cause Jesus words were central.
[00:26:16] They were the most important things. So the question is, when it comes to our spirituality and our maturity and our. As we grow spiritually, our words aligned our lives aligned to Jesus words. Now what's interesting here is when Jesus, he gets resurrected right after his crucifixion, he gets resurrected, he comes back and he gives us the Great Commission. Now, if you grew up in church, maybe you've heard it. You're like, I think I know the Great Commission. I think that that's what every church is supposed to do. Every church is supposed to do the Great Commission. I mean, if you're not doing the Great Commission, then what are you doing? What are you doing? Okay, let me read you the Great Commission. And I don't know if you've heard this or seen this, but you gotta know this is it. It's in here. Okay, so here's what happens. Jesus comes back. This is Matthew 28. Jesus comes and says to them, all authority he comes to them, he shows up, he says, all authority in heaven and on earth has given to me. She comes back, he says, now, all authority. So I am the most supreme.
[00:27:22] All authority has been given to me. And then he says this. And so therefore. And you probably heard that, you know, therefore, go and make disciples of all nations. Go all.
[00:27:35] Go to the world. Go to every part. There's no unclean people, and not clean people, whatnot. Go to everyone. And then you.
[00:27:43] And then he says, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit again. Now he's injected himself into this. Now, this is not a Jewish way to do things. And they're like, no. He says, no. Baptizing them in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And he says, and then doing this, he says, this is how you're making disciples. You're baptizing them.
[00:28:07] Right.
[00:28:08] And teaching them. Read this for yourself. And teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
[00:28:22] What? No, no.
[00:28:25] I thought making a disciple was getting everyone to agree on everything with the Bible.
[00:28:31] Do you know what has happened with that? What's happened with that is we have denominations because they're like, oh, well, we believe this and we believe that. And what if we believe this and we believe that?
[00:28:41] No, no.
[00:28:42] What Jesus was saying in the Great Commission was, hey, go baptize them in my name and then command them, tell them, teach them to do everything I.
[00:28:52] So my words, I have commanded you to do.
[00:28:56] And surely I'll be with you always to the very and of the age.
[00:29:02] See, I don't know how we missed this.
[00:29:04] It was always about Jesus words. It was always about his ways. It was always about his values. Because here's the thing. And you know this. We live in a world that takes the Scriptures. Like, we know that. You know, most of the world says it's Christian, right? Yeah, but what does that even mean? Because they're like, oh, yeah, because my Bible says this. Well, my Bible says that. My Bible says this. And what about this? And what about that? And here's what we're doing. Here's what we're doing. We're living in these chairs. We're living in these chairs. Living in these chairs. And all of a sudden, if we stop and we go, okay, okay, okay, okay, that's fine. You can believe all these things and not believe and agree. But here's what we gotta do. We have to live our lives though aligned to the words and the ways and the values of Jesus. Because if we don't do that, we have missed it. It's not just about believing. It's really about following. In fact. In fact, check this out. James says this. He says, you believe that there is one God. Good. Even the. What? Demons believe that. Even the demons believe that and they shudder. So just remember, it's not just about believing. It's actually about following. He goes on and says this. He says, hey, hey. Don't merely listen to the Word and so deceive yourselves. He said, if you just listen to the Word, if you just listen to the teachings, if you just listen to Jesus, if you just listen to. You just listen and you don't do anything. You are deceiving yourself. You're thinking, you're growing. You're thinking. You have all these cool ideas. You're thinking, you're loving spending time in Bible study, which is amazing. You should do that.
[00:30:31] You love theology, which is great. Awesome. Oh, my gosh. You love reading books. You love this stuff. You love Christian fellowship. You love all the Christian stuff, the merch. You love everything. Everything about it. Awesome. But at some point, you gotta actually do it. Because if you just believe all this and you think you're spiritually mature, you are deceiving yourself. Here is where it changes you. And I have to have to have to, in fact, just live out the words of Jesus and live out his ways and live out his values.
[00:31:08] Can I just tell you? What if every Christian did this? What if every Christian decided, you know what? Here's what we're gonna do. What? We're just not gonna agree on everything. But what we are gonna do is we're all gonna hold ourselves accountable to what Jesus said on how to treat each other, what Jesus said on how to manage our hearts, on how to deal with worry in our lives. If we were just gonna align our lives to just the words, just the words of Jesus and then his ways of doing it. Not our ways, our thoughts. No, no, no. Not what people are saying. No, it's cool. No. His ways and then his values. We took his values on how to treat humanity, on how to treat people who hurt you. We did all that, man. It would change the game.
[00:31:51] So today, so today, as we end. Okay, I'm getting too excited here. Okay, as we end, here's what I want you to do. What is one teaching. What's one teaching of Jesus that you can put into practice? One teaching of Jesus that you can put into practice so when it comes to maybe the needs that you have, the worries that you have, the hurts, the fears, the joy, the Success, the resources that you have. What is one teachings of Jesus that you can put into practice? Because I'll tell you, friends, and I'll tell you what. If you live your lives, if you live your lives by the words and the ways and the values of. Of Jesus, your life will be transformed. If you live your life on everything else and believing whatever, your life will just be very, very well informed, but not transformed. You and I have to. We have to actually live it out. So I want to pray for you because I want you to just.
[00:32:51] I want you to dream with me a little bit and think with me. What is. What is one thing? Not ten things. What. What is one thing you can do this week? One thing that you can put, what is one teachings of Jesus that you could actually put into practice? So let's do it. Can we do that? Let me pray for us. Let's pray together. Lord God, we just thank you so much for this time. We thank you, God, that even though we're not together, we know that, God, your ways, your ways are higher than ours. And so our life, God, our life goal, God, I'm praying would be that we would move our lives in God, not just to wanting to be fed all the time and not wanting to understand and wanting to have our own way. God, we would move, in fact, to an adult chair. We would move to a point that we're actually orienting our lives towards what you want to do. So, God, give us the courage to really face our fears and face really our ideas and our will. Because, God, I know that your words are cut to the core because they're challenging words. So, God, I just pray that we would be a church that lives out your words, your ways, and your values. In Jesus name I pray. Amen and amen. Friends, thank you so much for watching and hopefully we'll see you next week. Actually, we will see you next week.
